What to do first

If a tree hits a power line, or is touching one, stay at least 30 feet away and call DTE at 800-477-4747. Do not let anyone near it. If it is on the house, get everyone out of that part of the building and call us. If it is just across the driveway and nothing is damaged, that is urgent but not an emergency, and it will cost you less to schedule it for the morning.

How insurance works on this

Most homeowners policies cover tree removal when the tree damaged a covered structure, usually up to $500 to $1,000 for the removal itself, plus the repair to the structure. A tree that falls in the yard and hits nothing is usually not covered. We photograph everything before we cut, write itemized invoices, and give you what your adjuster needs. Call your insurer before we start if you can, but do not let the damage sit for days waiting on a claim number.

After a Michigan windstorm

Southeast Michigan gets a handful of severe wind events a year, and every one of them buries every tree company in the metro for a week. Priority goes to trees on structures and blocked emergency access. If your job is a downed limb in the backyard you may be waiting a few days, and anyone promising you same day during a regional event is either lying or not going to show.

Before you hire anyone: ask for a certificate of insurance showing both general liability and workers compensation, and get the estimate in writing. Those two things filter out most of the problems people run into with tree companies.

FAQ

Emergency Tree Service questions

Do you really answer at night?

Yes. The emergency line is monitored 24/7. Response time depends on how many calls are already in the queue, which during a major windstorm can be a lot.

Does insurance pay for emergency tree removal?

Usually yes if the tree damaged a covered structure like your house, garage, or fence. Most policies cap the removal portion at $500 to $1,000. A tree that falls and hits nothing is typically your cost. We provide itemized documentation either way.

What if the tree is my neighbor's?

In Michigan, liability generally follows negligence. If the tree was visibly dead or hazardous and your neighbor was told about it and did nothing, their insurance may be responsible. If it was healthy and the storm took it, it is usually treated as an act of nature and each homeowner claims their own damage. Document everything with photos.
